My senior economics thesis at Barnard College this past May found that women still prefer the man to pay the first date bill, even with the rising feminist movement in NYC.
Millennial women aged 22-28
OkCupid profiles interested in men
5 mile radius from Midtown Manhattan
51% of the women reported they would split the bill, 34% reported doesn’t matter who pays, and 15% reported they'd want the man to pay.
When taking into account a woman's time investment before, during, and after the date:
Women leaned more toward having the man pay.
Traveling over an hour to the date,
Texting the man before the date, &
Following the man on social media before the date,
All made a woman more likely to want the man to pay the bill.
Monogamy also had a big effect:
Women who listed "mongamous" on their OkCupid profiles were 14.3% more likely to want the man to pay - those looking for a relationship were serious about the man showing them true monetary chivalry.
